Theta Functions and Knots
The formula that governs the composition of transformations in Jacobi’s action of the modular group on theta functions also governs the change under gluings of the signatures of 4-dimensional manifolds.
We will explain how the possibility to give the first homology group of a closed Riemann surface two descriptions: one analytical and one topological is responsible for this coincidence.
